Dennis Leary's Superbowl Advice

Dennis Leary on OprahIf you're like me and have absolutely no interest whatsoever that this Sunday night is the Superbowl, then all I can say is please join me as I chat with friends, enjoy the commercials and sip wine while my husband is in another room shouting and cheering at our friend's 80 inch flat screen.

Of course, now that the Giants and Jets are out of the running, our interest level in who wins is not as high anyway, but nevertheless, while I am a self professed football avoider, I do have girlfriends who love the game and will watch it religiously with their spouses. In fact, my good friend Julie at Momspective even has a special "no pants" ritual in her house to ensure her team keeps winning games. Don't know how her players panned out this past year, but her no pants rule definitely does add a little spice to her marriage.

As we approach game day, I guess I'm lucky I'm not watching the kick off with "Rescue Me" star and comedian Dennis Leary. Over at Oprah.com, Leary just posted a list of 8 things that women should not talk about with men during the Superbowl.

So what's your take on the Superbowl? Are you a die-hard fan or couldn't care less?

E*Trade Baby Mail: Role Mommy Fave Find

You gotta love it when you start your morning with an email from the folks at E*Trade - they're the geniuses behind all those hysterical talking baby ads that run during the Superbowl. Well, get ready because thanks to the folks at Oddcast, they have just given us the chance to create our own talking babies and send them to friends and family via email, facebook, twitter!

Plus, if you're a blogger, you can embed it on your site too! I already sent the email below to my husband and I'm sure his buddies at the trading desk will get a big kick out of it or think his wife is pretty strange. Either way, take a look, make your own and then check out all the hilarious outtakes with the E*Trade babies.

And of course, if you happen to be watching the Superbowl this weekend, then get ready to watch a brand spankin' new E*Trade commercial with those adorable talking babies. Don't know about you but the commercials and half time are my favorite part of the game.

Family Movie Review: The Tooth Fairy

tooth-fairy-poster-0.jpgYesterday afternoon, I took my kids and one of their friends to see "The Tooth Fairy" with Dwayne Johnson. And while I've never really paid attention to why movies are released in January, versus the ones that are released during the summer or closer to the holidays, I now know why. January movies are duds. There, I said it.

Case in point. A few weeks back we were invited to see a screening of "The Spy Next Door," with Jackie Chan. It seemed pretty cute and I thought it would be an enjoyable film for the entire family. I should have known better. Don't get me wrong - my kids loved it. But they also loved "Shark Boy and Lava Girl." Me on the other hand, well, I had a hard time understanding Chan and the evil Russian villains and while the action was great, if they had showed the movie with subtitles, I probably would have enjoyed it more. But this wasn't a foreign film.

All kidding aside, when we were pulling up to the movie theater yesterday to see "The Tooth Fairy" my son chimed in from the back seat - "Can we see "The Spy Next Door" again???" To which I replied, "No way." Somehow I think there's a Spy Next Door DVD in our future with our name on it.

And now for the main attraction. We arrived at the theater pretty early and were the first take our seats. Note to theatergoers - if you enjoy going to the movies and not dealing with crowds, then always hit the movies early in the day. Anyway, we got our popcorn, sat down, watched a ton of previews for family films and decided I'd like to see the following movies in order of popularity:
Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief
Diary of a Wimpy Kid
A Dragon Movie by Dreamworks (forgot the title)

I can't remember the rest because at the precise moment the movie was about to start, three women came charging down the aisle with more than 10 kids under the age of five and they decided to sit down directly behind us. Of course, the theater was completely empty but they opted to take the uncomfortable elevator personal space approach. And to make matters worse, these kids were chatty. And they kicked seats. We must have given them at least half a dozen icy stares before I let out a huge "SSSSHHHHHH" and then my husband blurted "Don't make me come back there."

Back to the movie review. Let's put it this way, if you are comparing Dwayne Johnson's body of film work in order of favorite to least favorite, I believe "The Tooth Fairy" comes in dead center. My favorite film with Johnson is "The Game Plan" - I loved everything about that movie and even cried at the end. Then I saw him in "Escape to Witch Mountain" and pretty much could have done without that viewing. And "The Tooth Fairy," well they have an incredible cast - from Ashley Judd, to Julie Andrews to Billy Crystal and I did enjoy watching them in the film even though some of the dialogue was chock full of cliches.

The gist of the movie is simple - a dream killing hockey player whose nickname is "The Tooth Fairy" because he's known for knocking out people's teeth, tells his girlfriend's daughter that there's no such thing as the tooth fairy and she's crushed. He then gets a summons under his pillow to report for tooth fairy duty and for two weeks he must repent by retrieving teeth under the pillows of unsuspecting kids.

The scenes where Johnson is using all kinds of crazy methods to break into people's houses was quite funny and there is a nice twist at the end that makes the film incredibly corny and endearing at the same time. Anyway - while "The Tooth Fairy" is no Oscar contender, it did get a thumbs up from my family.

Role Mommy Deal of the Day

Screen shot 2010-01-28 at 4.55.21 PM.pngToday's deal of the day goes to my favorite online grocer, Fresh Direct. I've been one of their loyal customers for awhile now and I have to say that everything from the produce, to the freshly prepared meals to the 500 calorie entrees that you can cook in four minutes or less have been my saving grace in my quest to lose the same 10 pounds I've been trying to shed since my son was born (he is now seven years old).

Screen shot 2010-01-28 at 4.56.10 PM.pngA few weeks ago, the folks at Fresh Direct asked if I'd be interested in sampling a few of their newest low calorie entrees and since I had already tried the whole wheat vegetarian meatballs and spaghetti and the Tabla Shrimp with brown rice and vegetables (both are quite yummy), I decided to give the Mexican Lasagna a try. And while you may think that Mexican lasagna seems to be an odd combination, it's actually quite good. Not only was the portion size pretty filling, but the dish is made with three layers of corn tortillas, earthy black beans, fire-roasted corn, spicy tomato salsa and reduced fat cheddar cheese. Now here's the best part - it's only 370 calories!

FreshDirect's ready-to-heat-and-serve meals are available under three culinary brands: Smart & Simple, low calorie dinners, EatingWell vegetarian meals, and Tabla, New Indian cuisine. Go to www.freshdirect.com/4-Minutemeals.com to find out more about this exciting line of healthy and quick entrees.

According to FreshDirect, their 4-Minute Meals use an innovative seam-steam system and specially designed microwavable packaging that preserves the juiciness of the high-quality meat and crisp freshness of premium vegetables and herbs. Ready to heat and serve in just 4 minutes, every dish is just the right portion size and is healthy and satisfying.

For more information on FreshDirect's 4-Minute Meals go to www.freshdirect.com!

And here's another piece of great news from Fresh Direct - soon you'll be able to order your groceries from your cab, car (if you're not driving) and commuter train with a new, free iPhone application. Delivering virtually all of the functionality of FreshDirect.com, the free application will allow customers to create new orders, modify current orders and view FreshDirect's daily seafood and produce ratings. Stay tuned for more info on that front as soon as the app becomes available! Incidentally, I even ordered Fresh Direct for my family from Seattle - I guess the next frontier is Mars.

The 02 Diet with Guest Contributor Keri Glassman

o2 final cover.jpgI am so excited about my new book The O2 Diet: The Cutting Edge Antioxidant-Based Program That Will Make You Healthy, Thin, and Beautiful

As Mom's, we all know how very hard it can be to find time for taking care of ourselves. But, we have to! If you feel better, you are better - at everything! You are better at your job, being a mom, a wife etc.! The O2 Diet helps you focus on YOU - eating better and treating your body the way it's supposed to be treated, so that you will look good and feel good! Aside from the 2 Day O2 Cleanse, I have a 4 week plan and lots of recipes! This is one of my faves that my husband and kids are slightly obsessed with too!

The salmon provides you with antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids - both good for keeping your heart healthy and your skin glowing!

Salmon with Raspberry-Balsamic Glaze
6 fresh raspberries
2 Tbsp balsamic vinegar
1 tsp freshly squeezed orange juice
¼ tsp orange zest
½ tsp honey
Splash red wine (about 1 tsp)
4 oz skinless salmon fillet, preferably wild (about ¾"-thick)

1. Mash raspberries and vinegar with fork in small bowl. Stir in orange juice, zest, honey, and wine until combined. Set aside.

2. Coat nonstick skillet with canola oil cooking spray. Place over medium heat, about 1 minute. Cook salmon about 3 to 4 minutes per side or until fish is cooked through. Remove skillet from heat and carefully wipe any liquid with a paper towel.

3. Return skillet over medium heat and add reserved raspberry mixture. Cook, stirring constantly, 2 minutes or until just thickened.

4. Pour sauce over salmon and serve with asparagus on the side.

In The O2 Diet, nutritionist Keri Glassman translates cutting-edge science into an easy-to-do program that will leave dieters energetic, healthy, and beautiful-- inside and out. Kick-start weight loss and boost beauty with an easy 4-day cleanse and a delicious 4-week antioxidant-based program from CBS's The Early Show nutrition contributor. Glassman shows how dieters can--and should--indulge in foods like Caramelized Pear and Pecan French Toast and Flank Steak with Chimichurri Sauce and actually lose weight!

For once, it's not about counting calories or restricting what one eats; it's about eating more of the right things.

Best Gift of the Year...And the Winner is...

tassimo-coffee-maker.jpgI can't tell you how many times I have said to my husband - we need to get one of those coffeemakers that make one cup at a time - to which he replied, "Why do we need a coffee maker? We have a perfectly good one sitting on our kitchen counter (which we need to clean out every single day because we always manage to make 10 cups of coffee even though we only drink one cup each)."

And then it happened. We heard a knock at the door and a big box was awaiting me compliments of Dan Klores Communications. Lo and behold, they must have been reading my mind because when I ripped open the box, what did I find inside but a Bosch Tassimo Single Serve Coffee Brewers.

For those of you who are still die-hard Mr. Coffee owners, it's time to step proudly into a new decade and stop wasting java! Tassimo is Kraft Food's proprietary home brewing system that lets consumers make delicious coffee, tea, hot chocolate, cappuccino, espresso and lattes - one cup at a time!

As I literally let out a squeal, waking my husband from an after work nap, my kids had a great time jumping into the box and spreading styrofoam chips all over my floor. While we had to race out to buy some last minute holiday gifts, I informed my husband that the minute we got home, I would be transforming his world with a cup of coffee. I know - I'm insane but there's something about brewing one cup at a time in 60 seconds or less that gets me giddy.

We shopped for about an hour and when we returned home, my hubby had a splitting headache. And so I suggested he relax in the den while I prepare a Chai Tea Latte for him (that was one of the packages that came with the brewing system, along with Starbucks coffee and Gevalia cappuccino.) Within five minutes (I had a hard time figuring out the latte part but finally managed to make it work), out came a piping hot cup of chai tea latte and after my husband took one sip he proclaimed, "This is amazing!"

Incidentally, it is really easy to use - as long as you read the directions first. All you do is fill the back part of the machine with water (they even have a water filtration system so that every cup is fresh) take a T Disc, insert it in the front of the machine with the print facing downward (that's where I went wrong a few times), press down and voila, your coffee or tea starts brewing within 60 seconds. You also should wait until the light turns orange so that you know when the coast is clear to remove your cup from the dispenser. And did I mention you can even adjust the cup holder so if you're heading out in the car, you can fill an entire carafe with coffee for your morning commute. Love this machine...it thinks of everything!

So there you have it folks. This morning, I brewed myself a cup of Starbucks verona roast and I am contemplating having a second cup of Gevalia cappuccino just for kicks. Mark my words husbands or significant others...want to make your partner happy this holiday season? Then get them a Tassimo Home Brewing System. Sure my hubby was resistant at first, but after tasting one cup, I had him hook, line and latte.

For more of our fave gifts of the year, check out these picks below and let your fingers do the shopping!

Fave Five Holiday Time Saving Tips

Find more videos like this on Role Mommy

This morning, we got up at the crack before dawn to make an appearance on the WPIX morning news with Tamsen Fadal (love her!) We were on the show to offer time saving tips for the holidays and in case you missed it, we've got the clip above. Or, if you don't have time to watch but want our tips pronto, well, here they are.

Time Saving Tips for the Holidays
1. Shop for groceries online. Who has time to hit the supermarket when you're busy buying a snuggie for your Great Aunt Tilly? Instead, visit my hands down favorite online grocer - Fresh Direct. So why do they win top honors in my book? Simple. Not only can you order prepared meals that are restaurant quality (they've got dishes from Rosa Mexicano, Tabla and more); you can even order meats that are pre-marinated; four minute meals and if you dare to cook from scratch, they've got recipes right on the site that you can add directly to your shopping cart. Best of all, if you order this week between Tuesday-Thursday, delivery is free.

2. Visit parenting blogs for all your holiday gift needs. If you're like me and still haven't started shopping for gifts, no need to fear. Some of the best blogs I know are featuring incredible holiday gift guides. From Cool Mom Picks, to Classy Mommy, Twitter Moms and Lifetime Moms - where 13 blogging moms share their picks on everything from toys to home, beauty and fun (that would be my category). Incidentally, my three favorite picks this year for gifts include:
1. Kids - Scribblenauts for Nintendo DS - a game that requires imagination and spelling - gotta love that one!
2. Your Family - HP Touchsmart Wireless Printer
3. Friends and Family - 1-800 Baskets - I visited the basket factory in Chicago and trust me when I tell you - those gift baskets are gorgeous - they've got everything from wine to chocolate, cheese, crackers, Starbucks coffee and much more. And best of all - it's affordable!

3. Make clean up a breeze - No need to schlep your vacuum up and down the stairs when there's a spill in the living room. Make sure you have the brand new Swiffer WetJet with anti-bacterial solution handy and get your kids in on the act. My kids happen to wrestle over who gets the Swiffer and sometimes, if I have two in the house we hold races to see who finishes first. If only I could teach my cats how to Swiffer too.

4. Make Plans before You Leave Home - the worst thing you can do during the holiday is leave your home without a plan. I always love to check out sites like Mommy Poppins or New York Metroparents for their calendar of events. Instead of hitting all the tourist attractions and being crammed like sardines, we opt for fun alternatives like off-Broadway shows, museums, aquariums and holiday craft fairs. In the burbs, I visit Essential Mom. And when in doubt, there's always moviefone.com.

5. Relax and don't sweat it! I know - better said than done but trust me - if you take some time for yourself, you'll be armed and ready to take on the holiday singlehandedly. Even though my daughter asked me to find 26 dreidels for a class project that was due this morning, I didn't sweat it. Wandered into Papyrus and lo and behold, there was a bucket of dreidels awaiting. Sometimes visualization is key. Obviously, the people who run Papyrus are busy moms.

Enjoy the holiday and don't get stressed!!!

Melissa & Doug Favorites

You’re making your list, and checking it twice – the pressure is really on to find perfect gifts for all those little ones who’ve been naughty AND nice!

Selecting children’s gift can be tons of fun – after all, who doesn’t love to visit the local toy store and reminisce about the holidays when we were kids? Even so, sometimes the thought of figuring out what to buy that niece or nephew that you only see once a year can be quite daunting. Luckily, Melissa & Doug makes a fabulous line of more than 800 hand-crafted, high-quality children’s products to choose from, and we have some great advice for how to select that perfect present for just about any child!

Start by making sure you are selecting gifts in the appropriate age category so you’re little one will get the most play value possible! If you buy something targeted for an age that is too young, the toy might be “boring” or “too easy.” But if you buy something that is for an age that is too old, this could lead to frustration and the gift might be ignored. But, you’re in luck -- all of Melissa & Doug’s products are clearly labeled with age recommendations! AND, they all come with a variety of “extension activities” listed directly on the product or packaging that offer a bunch of different ideas for how the child can use the toy for endless fun!

Then, figure out what the child is into and what really excites them! Does he love to play pirate and never takes off that pirate hat he got for his birthday? Then a pirate-themed puzzle or puppet would be a perfect fit! Is she totally enthralled with fairy princesses and princess-themed movies? Then a princess magnetic dress up doll or a princess wand will be perfect gifts for her!

If you’re not sure what themes to go with but you remember hearing how much she likes to play “cooking” with Mommy, then turn to any type of pretend play food item and you’re sure to have a hit! If you don’t know the child that well, turn to generic categories like plush, puzzles or games – these types of gifts are great for any child. At www.MelissaAndDoug.com, you can shop for products by keywords like “pirate” or “princess” and find all types of items, or you can shop by category -- it’s really that easy!

Finally, consider your budget. Especially in today’s challenging economy, we are all conscious of price, and being able to get a great gift for a great price is super important! With Melissa & Doug, you definitely do not have to overspend to get the perfect gift! Our products are always a tremendous value and we have awesome gifts in every price range!

So, now you’ve read all we’ve had to say and still aren’t sure where to start in your quest for the perfect gift? Here are a bunch of ideas to get you started: (I mean, take it from us -- we have 6 kids of our own!)

Our play food toys are among our most popular toys each holiday season (and even year round for that matter!). Kids will be delighted with any of Melissa & Doug’s dozens of play food sets – they are innovative and fun, and truly stand up to tough preschool play. Choose from our classic Cutting Food Box ($19.99; includes eight pieces of wooden food that create a realistic “crunching” sound when sliced, a cutting board and a wooden knife) or our fun new Slice & Bake Cookie Set ($19.99; includes twelve wooden, sliceable cookies with 12 toppings that store in a durable dough tube, a wooden knife, spatula, cookie sheet and oven mitt). Or, if you know a child with a special interest or food love, some of our other play sets include a Sushi Slicing Set, an Ice Cream Parlor Set and a Grill Set.

Looking for a more versatile pretend play toy? Melissa & Doug Fold & Go Play Sets will be the perfect match! For girls, choose from the Fold & Go Dollhouse or Fold & Go Princess Castle ($49.99 each), and for boys the Fold & Go Medieval Castle ($49.99) is a perfect match! Looking for something more gender neutral? Check out the Fold & Go Barn or Fold & Go Stable ($49.99 each). All of these sets are beautifully designed to capture a child's imagination and come with accessory pieces for imaginative play. And, of course, they're all portable! Fold them up and take them with you to Grandma's!

For the little creative genius in your life, there is no better gift than the Melissa & Doug Deluxe Easel and Easel Companion Set! The adjustable height, double-sided, wooden easel ($69.99) features both chalk AND dry erase-boards, a locking paper roll holder, a child-safe paper cutter, four clips, and a plastic tray on each side to keep supplies within reach! Pick up the Easel Companion Set ($34.99) to go with it and you’ve got everything you need to get your little Picasso started – paper, paint, brushes, chalk, eraser and more!

Don’t forget those stocking stuffers and grab bags! Melissa & Doug Decorate Your Own craft sets are exactly what you need to stuff those stockings or throw into that grab bag! The sets come in various themes and varieties, including the Decorate Your Own Piggy Bank ($6.99), Decorate Your Own Picture Frame ($6.99), Decorate Your Own Princess Wand ($6.99), and Decorate Your Own Wooden Jet Plane ($12.99)! Each set includes the undecorated item (piggy bank, picture frame, princess wand or jet plane) and everything needed to decorate and personalize the item (paint, paintbrush, stickers and glitter glue are among some of the components in the sets). These sets are fun activities for kids at various ages and are priced right to be that perfect “little something”, stocking stuffer, grab bag or secret Santa gift!

If you’re still stuck on which present is right, visit www.MelissaAndDoug.com today to see our spectacular holiday selection! We know you’ll find just the right gifts for all those little ones in your life!

Making a Difference...One Step at a Time

7430_143438197028_681987028_2798247_3497783_n.jpgIn honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, we were proud to be a part of a very special initiative, the Gal to Gal Virtual Walk. We have been involved with this innovative fundraising effort since its inception two years ago, and have joined dozens of celebrities, breast cancer patients, supporters, family and friends on a 31 day virtual walk across America. All it takes is a five dollar donation (or you could donate more) and you can help grant the wishes of dozens of stage IV breast cancer patients.

The Gal to Gal Foundation, founded by Jeanne Fitzmaurice, the founder of Design her Gals, was established in honor of two women who were very close to Jeanne who lost their battle to breast cancer. The tour kicks off every year in Boston, the hometown of Jeanne's cousin Robin and ends in San Francisco, where her dear friend, Janice lived. In fact, prior to her death, Janice helped Jeanne create the Gal to Gal Foundation by crafting the organization's mission to help patients and families battling the final stages of breast cancer.

In 2007, Dorit Shapiro, a mom of two who had been diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer, became involved with the Gal to Gal Walk when she created her gal online and encouraged friends and family to participate. In addition, Dorit shared her personal story with the local CBS affiliate in Philadelphia and then asked Jeanne how she could donate her time and energy to the cause. Over the next year, Dorit researched organizations where Gal to Gal could donate funds to assist stage IV patients. As a result, Gal to Gal partnered with Living Beyond Breast Cancer - an organization which hosts events and provides vital educational information to patients and their families. The Gal to Gal Foundation also donates funds to Making Memories, which is dedicated to granting wishes of patients battling the final stages of the disease.

Aug2005BeforeDiagnosis.jpgIn 2008, Dorit was named the President of the Gal to Gal Foundation and in honor of this appointment, the organization hosted an event in New York City where Dorit gave a heartfelt speech about her commitment to helping patients such as herself who were facing an uncertain future. Despite the fact that her health was failing, Dorit looked radiant that evening and was thrilled to be surrounded by her close family, friends and supporters who joined her for this very special occasion. Less than one week later, Dorit passed away.

It is our hope that as we enter the final week of the Gal to Gal Virtual Walk, that we honor Dorit's memory by spreading the word about the importance of helping those individuals who were unable to catch their breast cancer diagnosis in time. There are countless women and men battling stage IV breast cancer and many no longer have the funds to pay for medical expenses or grant a final wish. We hope you'll find it in your heart this October to touch the lives of someone who really needs your help.

Join now and create your personal gal or guy and start strutting side by side with celebrities like Martha Stewart, Kristen Chenoweth, Lisa Rinna, Larry King, Steve Covey, and Denise Richards on a cross country virtual walk across the nation. Plus, if you register a team on the site, you can also be eligible to win a 7 day all expenses paid vacation to Puerta Vallarta. The team to raise the most funds on behalf of Gal to Gal will win this lavish trip.

I hope you will find the time to use your computer keyboard for a great cause. It only takes a few minutes to join more than 3000 women and men who are on a mission to help stage IV breast cancer patients and their families. Visit GaltoGalWalk.org today and make a donation to this incredibly worthwhile cause.
