American Idol Ladies Night: The Re-Cap

crystal-bowersox-american-idoljpg-739450c5a0da8af0_large.jpgIt's after 9 pm on the east coast and that can only mean one thing. American Idol is over and I'm enjoying every minute of "Glee" on Fox. But now that we've hit a commercial break, I'm going to launch into my assessment of tonight's edition of American Idol. The ladies were up tonight and I don't know whether the mandate was to select boring ballads from the 60s and 70s, but for some reason, several of the contestants went with song choices that didn't really showcase their voices.

Let's tackle the best and worst performances of the night. Starting with the worst. Sad to say, but I think Paige and Katelyn were out of their league tonight. Paige took on "Smile" and I expected her to perform some vocal acrobatics when she took the stage. Instead, she played it safe and told Ryan that she let emotions get the best of her - she was thinking of the Michael Jackson rendition of the song and it made her sad. That comment of course won her votes with my son - who demanded I text my vote for Paige but I held firm and said there would be no votes cast in her favor tonight.

As for Katelyn - she decided to take on one of my favorite singers of all time - Carole King. But when she starting belting out "I Feel The Earth Move," it felt as if she was either working in a karaoke bar or was a singer at a wedding. While my kids defended her performance saying that wedding singers are really good, I explained that wedding singers don't get record contracts - referencing one of our favorite movies of all time "The Wedding Singer."

As for my favorite performances of the night, Crystal by far was head and shoulders above the rest. Taking on Tracy Chapman's "Give Me One Reason to Stay Here," Crystal easily belted out the song and seemed so comfortable doing it. Being on stage in front of a crowd is where she belongs and I cannot wait until she records her first album - my personal prediction is that she will win the whole show, but we're still several months away from the final round. My second favorite performer is Lacey. She's gorgeous - looks like a cross between Martina McBride with a Cyndi Lauper hair color twist and her voice belongs on a CD. I personally would prefer to see her as a country singer, but maybe it's that Martina McBride thing that has me thinking she'd pull off "This One's For The Girls" really well.

As for the other singers, Didi, Lilly and Siobhan are also pretty strong contenders who I'm sure will sail through this week and make it into the final 12. So there you have it - check it out and see if you agree and get ready to catch the men Wednesday night! I must leave you now...time to watch the rest of Glee. Oh, how I love my music shows!

They don't have this week's performances online just yet...so enjoy Crystal from last week.

The Parentville Fave Five - Strolling Into Spring, Our Fave Five Strollers

Parentville.com

We're finally seeing signs of Spring, and this makes us want to stroll outside with our kids! Here's a great list of our members' favorite strollers.

Baby Jogger City Select

Baby Jogger City Select

The Baby Jogger City Select has 20 configurations forward and rear facing to hold two kids. It has a 4-position recline, is super easy to fold, has a large basket, smooth maneuverability (foam tires) with hand brake, and most impressively are the 16 combinations you can achieve with the City Select's double conversion kit.

Orbit Baby Infant Travel System

Orbit Baby Infant Travel System

Thanks to our member and clever mom blogger, Life with Pooka, we know her favorites. Not only is the Orbit Baby a cozy stroller, but it is also your car seat. The rotating base allows the seat to face forward, backward, or even to the side so you can pull the stroller up to a restaurant table. The base folds in half compactly and can be stowed easily in your trunk. And it grows with your child by adding a new toddler car seat!

Phil & Ted's Sport Buggy

Phil & Ted's Sport Buggy

Phil & Ted's Sport Buggy is a great stroller for two kids of different ages. It's good for suburban strolling, kids love to cruise in the bottom seat! But since the seat is close to the ground, it's not recommended for urban environments where mud puddles and dog doo doo are possible obstacles. This easily fits in the trunk of a car for trips to the mall, playground, etc.

Kolcraft Contours Stroller

Kolcraft Contours Stroller

Kolcraft Contours Stroller is a hardy stroller for anyone looking to get the most for their money. It has off roading wheels, a huge basket, cup holder and snack tray, and a seat that reverses for baby to look either way. Includes a cup holder and snack tray. It can recline flat for an infant and also hold a 4-year-old.

Uppa Baby Vista Stroller

Uppa Baby Vista Stroller Travel System

The Uppa Baby Vista Travel System is easier to use than the Bugaboo (The fold is one-handed, and the seat does not need to be removed to fold.). It has a great basket, too, which is key for urban living. However, be sure to get a cup holder to replace the one that comes with it - it's too flimsy!

If you have recommendations on your favorite cup holders, comment here, or post a recommendation on Parentville!

Be sure to check out other great strollers recommended on Parentville - such as the I'coo Targo stroller, iCandy stroller and Mountain Buggy Urban Double stroller, as well as Nomie Baby's new "Cozy Up" stroller blankets!

Parenthood: My New Favorite TV Show

parenthood-Lauren-Graham.jpgIf you've read Role Mommy for a while then you probably know that I'm a sap. I can't get enough of a TV series or movie that makes me laugh and cry and I'm here to report, I've just found my next favorite guilty pleasure...Parenthood.

While I didn't get to catch the premiere of the series, I hopped on over to Hulu and just caught it on my laptop and all I can say is Wow. Wow for featuring a show about a family that is so real and so dysfunctional but facing so many of the same issues that we all face as parents. The cast is stellar - from Lauren Graham to Peter Krause, Monica Potter, Craig T. Nelson, Dax Shepard, Bonnie Bedelia, Monica Potter, Erika Christensen and Mae Whitman.

From the single mom (Lauren Graham) with two troubled teens who has to move back home with her parents to make ends meet; to the son (Peter Krause) who everyone relies on to fix everything, who finds his eight year old boy may be suffering from a condition he cannot fix; to the workaholic sister (Erika Christensen) whose five year old daughter prefers her stay at home dad to her; to the commitment phobic brother who finds out he may be the father of a five year old boy, I have finally found a new show to add to my must-see TV list - thank you NBC for giving Jay Leno the boot to late night. You finally have a winner on your hands on Tuesdays at 10 pm!

Serving as executive producers are Oscar winners Ron Howard and Brian Grazer ("A Beautiful Mind," "Frost/Nixon"), Jason Katims ("Friday Night Lights") - who wrote the pilot episode -- and David Nevins ("Friday Night Lights," "Arrested Development"). Emmy Award winner Thomas Schlamme ("The West Wing") is the director and executive producer of the pilot.

So if you're keeping score, that means Parenthood will be joining my must see line-up of Brothers and Sisters, American Idol, Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice and anything on Disney Channel or Nickelodeon.

Want to check out Parenthood for yourself? Well sit back, click on the video below and trust me, you'll thank me for the TV tip!

Role Mommy Book Club

firefly-lane1.jpgLet me just say that I get most of my best book picks from two places - my girlfriends on my 8:48 commuter train and my mom. So when mom was raving about Firefly Lane, a new book she was reading while we were aboard our Princess Cruise, I told her if she loved it that much, then why not write a review for Role Mommy. And guess what, Role Bubbe came through with flying colors.

In the summer of 1974 Kate Mularkey meets Tullah (Tully) Hart. They become BFF.
Tully is raised by her grandmother. Tully's mother is a pot smoking hippie who manages to come back into Tully's life when she takes her to live on Firefly Lane. After a traumatic incident, Tully and Kate become best friends.

Tully is driven by her desire to be famous, while Kate although claims to want the same thing as Tully just wants to be a wife and mother.

Firefly Lane is set in Washington State and is a wonderful story of two women who share a 30 year friendship. Loving the music of ABBA and Fleetwood Mac makes this novel a must for all those who came of age in the 70's and later - it is also a terrific read for anyone with a close girlfriends and most of all, should be shared with your best friend.

Check out These Great Oscar Desserts!

As the Oscars are quickly approaching, Hyundai, one of the main sponsors for the awards telecast, has some really clever and mouthwatering dessert ideas of this year's nominated films including "Up in the Eclair" and "Inglorious Custards." Check it out...

If you're in the midst of planning a party, check out Hyundai's fan page on Facebook - they even have a personality test to show what kind of party thrower you are - incidentally, according to my answers, I'm a docu-geek.

Harriet the Spy: Blog Wars

Since my kids are diehard Disney Channel fans, I was happy to hear that a brand new movie is about to launch featuring "Wizards of Waverly Place" star Jennifer Stone. "Harriet the Spy: Blog Wars" premieres Friday, March 26 on the Disney Channel and brings the classic tale into the technological age as Harriet competes against fellow students to be the official class blogger.

The film was penned by mother-daughter team, Heather Conkie and Alexandra Clarke. Internationally acclaimed writer, Heather Conkie, gave her daughter, Alexandra Clarke, Harriet the Spy when she was a child and it represented a huge turning point in her life. She bought a notebook like Harriet and started writing everything down; from that point on she aspired to be a writer. Writing the film has been an incredible bonding experience for them and the adaptation has brought them full-circle.

We recently got the chance to speak with Alexandra when she joined us as a guest on Blog Talk Radio. Listen in as she shares how she got her start as well as the excitement of collaborating on her first official entertainment project with her mentor and Role Mommy her mom!

Hope you and your kids tune in on Friday, March 26 at 8pm ET/PT to Harriet the Spy: Blog Wars...I'm sure my kids will be front and center!!!

The 411: The Miracle Worker on Broadway

miracleworkeronbroadway.jpg I recently attended a preview for "The Miracle Worker" on Broadway starring Allison Pill, Abigail Breslin, Matthew Modine and Jennifer Morrison, and I'm here to let you know it's a must see production that's ideal for parents of tweens and teens.

Based on the true story of Helen Keller and Annie Sullivan, "The Miracle Worker" takes you inside the lives of the Keller family - where you first discover how Helen lost her sight and hearing and watch as her family continually refused to send her to an asylum despite the fact they couldn't control her dangerous outbursts.

At 13 years old, Abigail Breslin is brilliant in her role as Helen. Without uttering a word, Breslin is incredibly believable as a blind and deaf "wild child" who is desperately trying to connect with those around her. Allison Pill is awe inspiring in her role as Annie Sullivan. Pill is a true spitfire in this show - combining tenacity, humor and empathy as she guides Helen to a major breakthrough. Feature film star Matthew Modine makes his Broadway debut in "The Miracle Worker" and breathes humor and compassion into the role of Helen's father, Captain Keller. And mothers will instantly connect with Jennifer Morrison, who portrays Helen's mom Kate Keller, who never gave up on her daughter, despite the painful effects Helen's condition had on her family.

I recently spoke with one of the show's producers, Lynn Shaw, who joined me as a guest on Blog Talk Radio where she shared the inside story of how the current stage version of "The Miracle Worker" came to fruition. Plus, Lynn reveals some amazing behind the scenes stories from the show's rehearsals and tells us how she got her start as a theatrical producer. Listen in and enjoy!

If you're interested in taking your family to see The Miracle Worker on Broadway, visit the show's website today for show times and tickets. Plus, if you happen to attend a Tuesday evening show during the month of March, you'll get the chance to participate in "Talk Back Tuesdays" where the cast answers questions from audience members. Fans will be thrilled to know that Abigail Breslin poses for photos and signs autographs for those audience members who stick around to meet her after the show. Hope you get to see it and enjoy the show as much as I did!

Olympic Skating Workout with Chelsea Piers

asada.jpegSick of your normal workout? Inspired by the Olympics? Stop thinking, "I wish I could skate," and head outside to try your hand at skating.

Make the most of your time at the ice skating rink this winter with a skating workout from the coaching staff at Sky Rink at Chelsea Piers.

Skating is a great total body workout - legs, stomach, arms, and back. In order to simply balance on skates there are a host of core muscle groups that are used. So, lace your skates up good and tight, straighten up your back, tuck in your stomach and workout!

SWIZZLES: Start by extending your arms to the side for balance. Keep your arms at shoulder height with palms facing downwards and fingers extended. Allow your feet to go into the pigeon-toed position and bend your knees. Using the outside blade, slowly allow your feet to separate and glide on the ice. When you are about hip distance apart, continue to bend your knees and use the inside edges to get you back to the pigeon-toed position. You can also practice half swizzles, instead of separating both legs at the same time, alternate legs.
Muscles used - arms, shoulders, back, inner and outer thighs, and stomach.

ONE-FOOT GLIDES: This exercise commences with arms extended to the sides. Keep your back straight, tummy tucked and weight on your heels. Begin skating across the ice and, when you feel balanced, lift your left leg off the ice. Keep your left knee bent and bring your leg up towards your stomach. Alternate legs. When you've mastered that, try extending your leg behind you.
Muscles used - arms, shoulders, back, quads, hamstrings, buttocks, and calves.

LUNGES: You've done it before, in aerobic classes and at home. Now try it on the ice! Again, arms to the side and knees bent. Begin skating and continue bending your right knee, as you get lower let your left leg glide on the ice behind you. Hold it for as long as you feel comfortable. Then straighten your right knee and bring your left leg in. Alternate legs. Here is a good tip - you know you are bending your knees correctly when you can feel the top of your boot against your shin.
Muscles used - arms, shoulders, back, quads, hamstrings, buttocks, and calves.

CROSSOVERS: This exercise has two parts. First, back straight and tummy tucked! Now, stand on the ice and walk to the side by placing one foot over the next. Take your right foot and place it on the other side of your left foot. Continue doing so until you feel comfortable. Now, start skating slowly with knees bent and your arms extended. This time extend your right arm in front of you and your left arm behind you. Then, take your right foot and place it over your left foot. Continue crossing your right foot over your left and you will find yourself skating in a circle! Alternate arms and crossovers and skate in the opposite direction.
Muscles used - arms, shoulders, back, quads, hamstrings, outer thighs, and buttocks.

LEG LIFTS - This exercise doesn't call upon your sense of balance as much as some of the others. Stand facing the wall of the rink. Place your hands on the wall. While holding onto the wall, bend at the waist so your body is at a 90 degree angle with the wall. Lift one leg straight behind you. Raise and lower the leg while balancing on the blade of the other skate.
Muscles used - Buttocks, hamstring, and lower back.

SQUATS - This exercise if very similar to the traditional exercise on the ground. Start by just skating until you pick up a little speed. Raise your arms out to the sides for balance. Then with your legs slightly separated, squat down to a sitting position, while still gliding on the ice. Squat up and down slowly, as many times as you can until you loose speed.
Muscles used - quads, hamstrings, buttocks, back arms, and shoulders.
