Matched in Manhattan - Brand New Lifetime TV Show That'll Have You Hooked!

I know I'm married and have two kids, but I have to admit, I am a sucker for dating shows. I love everything about them - from making over a geeky looking girl to look like a babe, to those awkward first meetings, to love at first sight - there's nothing like a good old fashioned dating show to get some tips on how to attract a guy - or keep your current guy still interested. That's why I can't wait for the premiere of Matched in Manhattan on Lifetime this Friday, January 4 at 9:30 pm ET. The show features relationship expert and dating coach Matt Titus along with his wife, Tamsen and their friend Eddie as they attempt to match hopeless New York City singles in search of Mr. Right. Matt offers some great tips on how to attract your mate, where to find him and how to clear out your apartment (or love shack) so that you don't scare him off. So get ready - and have your date night in front of the tube this Friday night...you'll be glad you did!

Was it Something I Said?

I think I have a complex. Or it might just be a rude neighbor. You see, a few days ago, I was shopping with my husband and kids and we noticed a mom I knew shopping with her young daughter and when I walked over to say hello, she snubbed me. I mean, I even called out her name and she did that "I'm pretending not to see you look" that I've used dozens of times on people I don't want to say hello to because then I'll be caught in a conversation with someone I really don't feel like speaking with in the first place.
Wait a second. Did she pull "the snub" on me because she wanted to avoid me? Am I annoying? Or someone she doesn't want to even acknowledge even though I practically see her every day at my kids' school? Was it something I said, or didn't say? I have to admit, it was rude of me to not buy her a baby gift when she gave birth about a year ago, but I didn't think she'd hold it against me.
Come to think of it - she's not the only person who purposely snubs me even though I know she knows exactly who I am. There's one mom in particular - I actually wrote about her about a year ago in a post called The Witches of Preschool - she is by far the Queen of all snubbers in my neighborhood. I can't tell you the dozens of times I've seen her at school, in the supermarket, the post office, and even at my own kids' birthday party and she pretends not to see me or will carry on a conversation with another mom and act as if I'm not in the room. I don't know what I did to her either, but she is by far the rudest snubber I've ever met - except of course for my cousin.
Yes, my own relative has snubbed me on numerous occasions. Even though we live approximately 1/4 mile from each other, we are practically in another country - I'm in New Rochelle, she's in Scarsdale - in a gi-normous mansion. I've never been invited to her home and have told my parents on numerous occasions that we should just ring and run just so we can check out her expansive foyer. One time, she even snubbed me as we were walking into a Chinese restaurant and she was walking out. She gave me that "I'm looking over your head" so I don't see you snub - a classic.
I am really growing tired of being snubbed by rude women and relatives and while I may be partly to blame, why can't people stop being oblivious for a change? I know I'm guilty of snubbing people from time to time, so maybe in the New Year, I'll make a point to smile when people try to catch my attention. Say hello when someone calls my name and never ignore my neighbor. Wait, I just discovered the 11th commandment - Thou Shalt Not Snub.

OUR NEXT EVENT! JANUARY 23 AT THE WHITE PLAINS LIBRARY... AUTHORS & BOOKS WE LOVE!

REGISTER TODAY FOR AUTHORS WE LOVE!
It's that time of year again...time for another Role Mommy Event, but this time around, it's for parents only! On Wednesday, January 23 from 7-9 pm, we'll be kicking off a book event series hosted by the White Plains Library, located at 100 Martine Avenue, White Plains, NY. The topic for our first event will be Authors & Books We Love and we'll be featuring bestselling author Jane Green, who personally had me hooked when I read one of her first books, Jemima J and I've pretty much read every book she's written since! Her latest novel is called Second Chance and she'll be talking about her meteoric rise to the bestseller list as well as balancing her writing career while raising four children.
Also appearing will be novelist Gwendolen Gross, whose new book The Other Mother, made the Role Mommy list of favorites in 2007. This compelling read paints a realistic portrait of the intense divide between a working and stay at home mom and has received rave reviews from critics and readers alike! This is Gwendolen's third novel - her other books include The Field Guide and Getting Out.
Our third panelist is Pamela Dorman, Vice President and Editorial Director for Every Woman's Voice which publishes a host of great reads for women 35 and older. The imprint features a wide range of offerings from the controversial book by Leslie Bennetts, The Feminine Mistake to the side-splitting humor of Judy Gold and Kate Moira Ryan who penned, 25 Questions for a Jewish Mother, to adjusting to life when your kids fly the coop in The Empty Nest by Karin Stabiner, among a host of new releases, including the poignant new memoir, The Middle Place, by breast cancer survivor and mom, Kelly Corrigan. Dorman has the magic touch when it comes to selecting works that will resonate with readers. In fact, prior to launching Every Woman's Voice, Pam was a top editor at Viking Press where she edited some of the most memorable novels of the last two decades including The Secret Lives of Bees, The Mermaid's Chair, The Memory Keeper's Daughter and Bridget Jones Diary, among many others!
So join us for a wonderful night with these amazing women - we'll have refreshments, some goodies and a book signing too! Books will be available for sale at the event by Borders. Seating is limited so please Click Here and register today!

Moving to a New Neighborhood? Check out Street Advisor.com!

If you're looking to move to a new city or town with your family, wouldn't it be great to find out if the neighbors on the street where you're contemplating buying a house or apartment were actually friendly? Or, if the area has some great restaurants or shopping options for you and your family? Or if it's a really busy street even if you didn't notice the traffic whizzing by when you were at that open house? Well, there's actually a new site called Street Advisor that features real opinions from people living in the neighborhoods you may want to live in. Just enter in the block you want to find out about, and Street Advisor will instantly tell you if people in the area have shared their personal comments about how they really feel about living on that street. And, if you're currently living somewhere that you love, or loathe, feel free to visit the site to share your opinions about your neighborhood too. There must be a reason why you want to move...so let other people know the truth before it's too late! By the way, I happen to love my block so I'll be visiting Street Advisor soon to spread the love about New Rochelle! To return to Role Mommy, click here.

A Partridge in a Pear Tree

I have a supermarket confession to make. I hate running errands on the weekends and usually spend my time online ordering all of my groceries on Peapod.com. Usually, my online food shopping expedition makes my life incredibly easier. All I need to do is whip out my jumbo list and pretty much check off all the items I THINK (operative word being "think") I need for the kids' school lunches, breakfast, dessert and a random dinner item here and there. Well, for some bizarre reason, this week my grocery shopping went a little haywire.
First off, my husband decided to run to the supermarket and pick up a few loaves of bread and some milk just as I had sent in my order, so I knew right off the bat that we'd have a ton of extra multi-grain and raisin bread this week. But somehow, when it came to my fruit order, I have no idea what kind of synapse disconnect my brain was experiencing at that moment. Was I busy sending someone a blackberry message? Was I on the phone? Was I reprimanding one of my kids? The answer is a mystery. All I know is instead of ordering four delicious anjou pears, I ordered 41.
Yes, 41 pears. I don't even think I've eaten 41 pears in my lifetime but now I'm going to have to come up with a bunch of different recipes so we can finish the pears without them going rotten. Hmmm....we could have pear soup, pears on a salad, pear with figs, plain pears, pear juice...are there any other recipes for pears? I guess I'll have to surf around the web for some more recipes, or I can just give them away as snack to my son's class this week. Forget those choke-able grapes, I've got a perfect fruit for every kid in class...who wants a pear?
Maybe that's where the whole Partridge in a Pear Tree got started. Either way, I'm pretty sure that next time I try to do a little online grocery shopping, I double check my order before I purchase fruits in the double digits.
To send us a favorite pear recipe, don't be shy, email it to me at beth@rolemommy.com or to return to Role Mommy, Click Here.

The Flip Video Camera & One True Media

I just discovered the coolest video camera that anyone, including your kids can use. It's called the Flip and it's smaller and lighter than a regular camera, shoots video that are surprisingly great quality and, now here's the best part - when you want to screen the video, there's a USB connector attached to the camera - which means you'll never lose it and you can instantly download the video right onto your computer and then send it to friends and family. And, if you want to visit a site where you can edit the video easily, add music, special effects and then upload it to YouTube or blogger or even your Tivo, then visit One True Media where you can easily create the coolest videos featuring you and your family. Best part of all about the Flip - it's surprisingly inexpensive. Check out the latest video I created in a matter of minutes - it's called The Ice Picker and it's pretty funny if I do say so myself!
